In 1940 the Epynt military training ground, covering about 30,000 to 36,000 acres (roughly 12,000 to 14,500 hectares) was established. There were 54 farms located on the Mynydd Epynt community area before it was cleared including a local pub, a school and chapel with its cemetery. Many other rural Welsh-speaking communities were lost to reservoirs. This is one of the reasons that large corporate companies buying up farmland in Cymru for afforestation and carbon offsetting is seen with deep distrust.
